Adjustable kettlebell vs ‘cast iron’ kettlebell: The debate

If you’ve read this far, you’re staring down kettlebells like you do that person hogging the squat rack at the gym. But what do you go for?

You’ll have to choose between buying an adjustable or a cast iron kettlebell. A tough decision we know, but let’s try and help you out a little and you can thank us later …

Cast iron kettlebells are considered ’the originals’ as they closely resemble the original Russian design whereas the emergence of adjustable kettlebells is a direct result of people wanting to have more flexibility in their kettlebell workouts without flooding their homes with multiple pieces of equipment.

What you buy very much depend on what type of training you need a kettlebell for – toning, strength training, fat burning, or a mix of all?

For lighter home workouts and toning, a smaller cast iron kettlebell (or two) will fit the bill. For strength training and progression, you’re better suited to an adjustable kettlebell, especially if you live in a smaller flat or a shared household.

Adjustable kettlebells are often preferred by those with a home gym and are looking to save space and get the most versatility from one product. In the long run, the bank balance will also thank you for it.

5 kettlebell exercises you should be doing

 Kettlebell swings

How it works

  1. Your feet should be set a little wider than shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and hold the kettlebell with both hands.
  2. Using your hips to drive the movement, keep your back flat and neck straight and swing the weight up to shoulder height.
  3. Return to the start position and repeat without losing momentum.

The Benefits

The kettlebell swing is a great exercise to improve your anaerobic fitness. It accelerates your heartrate and burns fat that leave most compound moves with envy.

Alternate Clean and Press

How it works

  1. Knees slightly bent and legs shoulder-width apart – holding your adjustable kettlebell by your thigh.
  2. In one quick movement, slightly jump off the ground and raise your arm to extend above your head.
  3. Land softly on your feet with your knees bent (like a squat) and repeat with your other arm.

The Benefits

The alternate kettlebell clean and press is great for grip strength as well as any overhead movement – your shoulder press will thank you for it

Kettlebell Goblet Squat

How it works

  1. Your legs should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, place both hands (palms facing each other) on your adjustable kettlebell and bring it to the front of your chest. This is your start position.
  2. Lower yourself into a squat by bending your knees, keeping your kettlebell in the same position.
  3. Drive back up – repeat.

How it works

  1. Hold your kettlebell in one hand between your legs and squat down until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  2. Through your hip and knees, drive upwards. As the kettlebell gets to shoulder height, rotate your hand and push it upwards until you’re locked out at the arm.
  3. To finish the move, squat down and return the kettlebell to the start position.
  4. Repeat and swap sides.

The Benefits
